In the fall of 2021, CHPRC convened to discuss a recently enacted California law (Senate Bill 159) that authorizes licensed pharmacists to furnish a 60-day supply of HIV prevention medication, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). To better understand implementation challenges, pharmacists, including those representing the California Society of Health Systems Pharmacists (CSHP), were invited for a virtual listening session/meeting to discuss barriers and facilitators to SB159 implementation. Based on these meetings, there was a shared interest in developing a study to assess HIV prevention services delivery by pharmacists across the state. In July 2021, the UCLA Law Center on Reproductive Health, Law, and Policy (CRHLP) joined the collaborative to gain a better understanding of pharmacists’ experiences with delivery of reproductive health services including provision of hormonal contraceptives and medication abortion.
